E-mail Update - January 2004

Dear friends and colleagues:

We are pleased to inform you of recent news from CeBASE (http://www.cebase.org):

  • 50 new lessons learned were added to our repository concerning COTS-Based Software Development, bringing the total to 129 lessons learned. Check out the latest lessons learned at: http://fc-md.umd.edu/ll/index.asp.

·        On December 16, 2003, CeBASE collaborated with Visek (http://www.visek.de) to conduct an eWorkshop on Software Inspections and Pair Programming. At a first glance, these practices seem to share the common aim of collaboration among developers/reviewers to develop quality software with minimal defects. But one takes place while developing software and the other while reviewing already existing software products. The eWorkshop discussed: 1) commonalities/differences and relative strengths/weaknesses of these practices,  2) under what conditions each practice might be preferable, and 3) under what conditions the two practices could be merged and what might be gained by doing so. We were happy to have the input of a very lively set of over 20 participants. As usual, the discussion was very interesting and soon we will post the results of that discussion in our website. For the time being, the log of the discussion can be accessed at: http://www.cebase.org/www/Resources/eWorkshops/PP-insp.html.

  • The MBASE CSCI577 Project Archive, from our CeBASE partner, the University of Southern California (USC), can now be accessed at: http://sunset.usc.edu/cse/pub/research/577project_archive/. The archive is composed of categorized software engineering empirical data, models and methods. Individuals researching software engineering will find the repository very useful. The archive contains artifacts from projects from two courses. The first course, CSCI577a, focuses on software plans, processes, requirements and architectures. The second course, CSCI577b, focuses on product creation, integration, testing and maintenance. The artifacts generated follow the MBASE guidelines.

Please remember you can always contribute to our website and this newsletter. If you believe you have papers, tools, and/or events that might interest the CeBASE community, please let us know, and we can add a link to your publication or tool from the website.
